Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —
Mako Komuro, formerly known as Princess Mako from Japan, left for the United States on Sunday (14/11) with her husband, Kei Komuro.
He left for New York after a wedding ceremony in Tokyo last month and the princess renounced her status as a member of the Japanese empire. Kei and Mako go to the United States after Mako gets her first passport.
Their move has been discussed for a long time. The two took a commercial flight on Sunday from Tokyo to New York, where Mako’s husband Kei Komuro works.
Citing AFP, escorted by police and airport officials, the couple passed about 100 journalists and cameramen without answering questions.
Their marriage was met with opposition from Japanese citizens. Marriages between the imperial family and commoners are considered by Japanese citizens to be tainted marriages.
They got engaged in 2017, but the controversy continues. The couple had to face a variety of public slanted talk. Tabloids began highlighting reports that the Komuro family was experiencing financial difficulties.
As a result of this controversy, Mako is reportedly experiencing mental stress. The couple postponed their wedding.
In 2018, Komuro moved to New York, USA, to continue his law studies.
However, the two remained married. Unlike other members of the Japanese imperial family, Mako’s wedding will be held very simply. They will not even hold wedding ceremonies, receptions, and other rituals.
As reported by AFP, Mako will not even accept a wedding gift in the form of money from the empire. The Imperial Governing Body stated that the rejected money amounted to 153 million yen, equivalent to Rp. 19 billion.
