Former Japanese princess Mako and new husband tell … (Brussels)

The Japanese couple Komuro, consisting of the former princess Mako and her non-aristocratic other half, are going to live in New York. Mako gave up all her imperial title to marry a commoner.

Japanese ex-princess Mako, who lost her imperial status after her marriage to commoner Kei Komuro in late October, left for New York with him on Sunday. The couple wants to settle there, because Komuro is going to work in a law firm. For the time being, not as a lawyer at the bar – he did not pass the exam yet -, but as a legal assistant.

The two took a commercial flight to New York from Tokyo-Haneda airport. Although they no longer bear titles of nobility, there was an impressive number of bodyguards accompanying them. Since they announced their relationship four years ago, they got quite a lot of opposition from conservative quarters.

Humble Marriage

Mako en Kei Komuro, beiden 30 jaar, married at the end of October in Tokyo, without the lavish imperial rites and without financial compensation from the state normally awarded when women leave the emperor’s house. Mako also wants to work for a living, she hopes to find a job in New York.

The whole situation sometimes evokes comparisons with Harry and Meghan, the former British prince who also gave up his royal status after his marriage to the American Suits-actress. They also migrated to the United States – albeit the sunnier west coast – and are now trying to build a life there with (own) income.

The Japanese Emperor no longer has a political role, but remains an important symbolic figure in Japan. Mako Komuro, formerly Princess Mako of Akishino, is the first child and eldest daughter of Prince Akishino and Princess Kiko. She is the eldest grandchild of former Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko of Japan.
