Former Japanese Prime Minister Abe Shot During Speech

Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot during a speech in the city of Nara, reports the Japanese broadcaster NHK† Abe, 67, was shot from behind and was taken to hospital unconscious. The suspected shooter has been arrested. It would be a 42-year-old man.

An NHK reporter is said to have heard two gunshots and saw that Abe was bleeding. The police have secured the used weapon.

The former prime minister was in Nara to campaign for the upper house elections next Sunday. He arrived from Tokyo and was due to travel on to other cities today.

Abe was Prime Minister of Japan from 2006 to 2007 and from 2012 to 2020 on behalf of the conservative Liberal Democratic Party.
