Silvio Berlusconi was released from hospital on Friday. The former Italian prime minister was admitted to the San Raffaele hospital in Milan a month and a half ago with a lung infection as a result of his chronic leukaemia.
It looked worrying for the 86-year-old politician for some time. He was initially in intensive care until he was transferred to a regular ward about a month ago.
About two weeks ago he spoke from the hospital to the conference of Forza Italia. Smartly dressed and sitting behind a desk, with his party’s banner and the Italian flag behind him, he thanked the party members. They had helped him “overcome a very dangerous pneumonia”.
Berlusconi has been struggling with his health in recent years, resulting in several hospital admissions. In 2020, for example, he was in hospital for eleven days due to COVID-19 and pneumonia.
Visit of Prime Minister Meloni
The politician was Prime Minister of Italy three times between 1994 and 2011. He currently sits in the Italian Senate on behalf of Forza Italia. That party is also part of the current government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
The prime minister visited Berlusconi in hospital on Sunday. According to Meloni, he was in an “excellent mood” and still “tireless”.
In Italy, Berlusconi is also known as a media tycoon and as one of the richest people in the country. For example, he owned football club AC Milan and owns a number of television stations.
Football, prostitution and sex scandals
The former prime minister is also known for his striking statements. He is said to have promised players of AC Monza, the Serie A club he currently owns, at the end of last year to send prostitutes to the dressing room if they won a match.
He also became involved in several lawsuits about bribery, tax fraud and sex scandals. For example, he is said to have had sex with the underage prostitute ‘Ruby the Heartbreaker’ at one of his infamous bungabunga parties.
