Calcutta: Naresh Kumar, a major contributor to the rise of tennis in independent India, has passed away. He was 93 years old. He represented the country eight times in the Davis Cup and was the captain of the Indian team. He played in the pre-quarter-finals of singles at Wimbledon in 1955, in the quarter-finals of doubles in 53, 55 and 58 and in the quarter-finals of mixed doubles in 57.

He landed at Wimbledon eight times in a row. In 1958 he reached the third round of the French Open. Naresh Kumar was born on December 22, 1928 in Lahore. In 1949 they made history by reaching the final of the Northern League in England. He has also won the Irish and Welsh Championships. Naresh is also the one who has had a decisive influence on the career of big stars including Leander Paes. Two years ago, the country honored him with the Dronacharya Award. He has a wife and three children.
