Atiq Ahmed (61) and his brother stood up for the press when a gun was pulled to his head.
The former Indian politician, who has also been convicted of kidnapping, was shot and killed on Saturday evening, writes BBC. Atiq’s brother, Ashraf, was also killed.
The brothers are said to have been under police protection when they met and answered questions from the press.
In a video that has spread online, the Ahmed brothers can be seen walking, while a number of reporters ask questions. Shortly into the clip, while the camera that filmed the whole thing focuses on the two, a shot is heard and Atiq falls to the ground. Then more shots are fired and Ashraf also falls over.
Three men who allegedly posed as journalists surrendered and were arrested, according to the BBC. The incident took place in the Indian city of Prayagraj in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The BBC writes that a local court in March this year sentenced the ex-politician and two others to life in prison after a kidnapping case. Ahmed and his brother are said to have been on their way to a medical check-up at a hospital when they met the press and shots were fired.
The 61-year-old was active as a politician in India for a number of years. In the period 1999 to 2003, he was leader of the political party Apna Dal.
In 2004, he won a seat in the federal election and became an MP, writes the BBC.
In addition to being a politician, Ahmed was recently involved in a number of serious criminal cases which allegedly involved assault, kidnapping and murder.
According to the BBC, he should have been accused in a murder case as early as 1979.
