Former Swiss hockey official René Fasel, who was president of the International Hockey Federation (IIHF) from 1994 to 2021, will work in the structures of the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
Fasel resigned as IIHF president last September. Already during his many-year career, his close relationship with Russia or the KHL itself was evident. Upon his resignation, he was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
Referring to the league itself, the rsport portal informs that Fasel will operate at the KHL, where it will assist with strategic development.
“Fasel has vast all-round experience and expertise, and the league will actively involve him in addressing KHL’s strategic development issues.” said the press department of the league.
The Continental Hockey League had to deal with the problems caused by the Russian military invasion of Ukraine this season. The Jokerit Helsinki club withdrew from the playoffs and Dynamo Riga also withdrew from the competition. Several foreign players have ended their work in Russian clubs. The future of the KHL is thus questionable, also due to the applicable sanctions against Russia.
