“Outside view” in the oasis – art change 01/24
Cologne is tolerant, cosmopolitan, steeped in history and a big party every weekend. But Cologne is characterized by prejudices against others, difficult to teach and intoxicated by itself. Realities collide vehemently here – as in other metropolises. The current exhibition at the Oase eV headquarters on Alfred-Schütte-Allee reveals subjective views of Cologne. In the open meeting of the advice center for people affected by housing or homelessness, four amateur photographers capture their perception of the city in more than 30 pictures.
Equipped with disposable cameras from Dr. Funded by the Peter Deubner Foundation and distributed to interested parties by the association’s street workers, Gheorge, Doro, Reiner and Lothar, who died a few months ago, recorded their surroundings without filters in the summer of 2023. Here too, at least the double face of the city is revealed: picturesque sunrises over sleeping roofs and empty wooden shacks, which are supposed to offer at least a little protection from cold or heat, are close together in the depictions. A previously unusable refrigerator (because it has no electricity) becomes the pride and joy of a tiny house resident, because the object conveys a hint of prosperity and at least appears usable as a lockable shelf. But a lack of understanding is also reflected in the images: for example, a kiosk can be seen whose owner did not want to accept the photographer’s carefully collected empties. Blank house facades, on the other hand, reflect the protective walls of apartments, without which around 6,000 homeless people in the cathedral city alone have to make do every day. Curator Anemoneträger rightly emphasizes the authenticity of the recordings. Nothing is provided. “Outside View” focuses on the moment and reports on life on the fringes of society in short, blunt sentences. A worthwhile and thought-provoking documentary.
