Park Jeong-hoon, former head of the Marine Corps investigation team who was arrested on charges of mass mutiny while investigating the death of Corporal Chae Su-geun, applies for convening the Military Prosecutors’ Investigation Review Committee.
Attorney Kim Gyeong-ho, legal representative of Colonel Park Jung-hoon, said, “The objective and fair third institution that Investigator Park mentioned yesterday is the Military Prosecutor’s Investigation Review Committee.”
Attorney Kim said, “I will formally apply to the Ministry of National Defense prosecutors to convene this committee the day after tomorrow (the 14th).”
The Military Prosecutors’ Investigation Review Committee was created to improve the fairness of the military prosecution after the death of Air Force Sergeant Lee Ye-ram.
This committee is convened to increase public trust in the procedures and results of military prosecution investigations in the case of ‘cases that raise public suspicion or attract social attention’.
The committee is composed of 5 or more and 20 or less members, and deliberates on whether to continue the investigation, whether to file or not prosecute, and whether to request or re-apply for an arrest warrant.
Attorney Kim emphasized that ″This case is a case in which the head of the investigation refused the investigation by the Ministry of National Defense prosecutors, arguing for self-defense.″
In addition, ″It is a case that raises many public suspicions and draws social attention.″ ″It is very necessary and significant that this committee, rather than the Ministry of National Defense prosecutors, decide whether to continue the investigation and whether to file charges or not to prosecute.
