Former head of BDZ: Remove the Plovdiv railway line

The concrete bridge must be removed – announced the former executive director of BDZ AD Oleg Petkov, who took part in a discussion about traffic problems in Plovdiv within the framework of the preparation of the Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility, a reporter told Plovdiv24.bg.

There are 4 railway crossings which is a problem for the railway. The other serious case study is the Plovdiv – Filipovo line. It has three crossings that hinder the development of the city to the west. The intention of NKŽI is to build an overpass, but according to Petkov, it would be better to build underpasses.

“This line is no longer necessary. We used to maintain it because the military used it to transport their equipment. Now there is no need for it,” explained the expert.

In his opinion, the railway line between Plovdiv Central Station – Filipovo Station should be dismantled, because it hinders transportation and the harmonious development of the city. Instead of erecting a railway overpass, a few electric locomotives can be bought and suburban passenger trains run.

“If trains leave every 3 minutes, people will get out of their cars and use rail transport,” Petkov believes.
