Guinea’s former leader Moussa Dadis Camara was taken from prison in the capital Conakry by heavily armed men on Saturday morning. He has now been arrested again and taken back to his cell.

The Guinean army and Camara’s lawyer confirmed to the French news agency AFP that the former junta leader has been found “safe and sound” and returned to prison. The army spokesperson did not share further details surrounding his disappearance and return.

Camara’s co-suspects were also said to have been taken on Saturday morning. The former junta leader’s lawyer called it a “kidnapping” and said Camara’s life was in danger.

To find Camara, the West African country’s borders were closed. According to residents, the army and special forces patrolled the streets of the capital on Saturday.

Camara came to power in a coup in 2008. A year later, a massacre occurred during a major pro-democracy protest. The tens of thousands of participants in this protest did not want the junta leader to participate in the presidential elections. More than 150 people were killed when security forces cracked down on protesters. Camara is now being prosecuted for his role in the massacre. He himself denies being responsible.
