“The gains of the left Petro can be called historic. Colombia has always had right-wing governments. This is partly due to the civil war that has raged in the country for a long time. Left-wing guerrilla groups such as FARC and M-19, where Petro himself was once a member of, fought against the right-wing governments.
For that reason, it has long been sensitive that a left-wing presidential candidate would come to power. But the Colombians have now radically opted for change. They wanted to get rid of right-wing governments like that of the center Democrats, who had been in power for a long time.
In addition, it was not entirely clear to voters what Hernández exactly stood for. With Petro, it was clear from the start. For example, he wants to focus on a green and social policy and he wants to tackle corruption in the country.”
