“Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy Loses Corruption Case and Receives Final Prison Sentence”

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy has lost his corruption case. This means that the prison sentence imposed on him in 2021 is final. The court in Paris issued its verdict on Wednesday morning.

In 2021, the former president was sentenced to three years in prison. Two years of that are probation and he can spend the remaining year at home with an ankle bracelet. It is therefore not a ‘real’ prison sentence.

Sarkozy was sentenced for bribing a judge and abusing his power. He did that when he was president of France.

He bribed the judge in exchange for information about an investigation into illegal financing of Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2007, when he would have far exceeded the maximum allowed budget. Sarkozy was also sentenced to a year of house arrest in that case.

Sarkozy’s lawyer Jacqueline Laffont says the former president is innocent. She also said she would appeal the court’s decision. “This is just the beginning of the process.”
