Former football star Cierre Wood has been sentenced to life imprisonment. He was responsible for the death of his girlfriend’s daughter five years ago.
He once played in the NFL for the Houston Texans and the Buffalo Bills, now he has to go to prison: The former football star Cierre Wood has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the USA. The 33-year-old murdered a five-year-old girl five years ago.
Back in April, Wood pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated child abuse, according to a report by NBC. The murdered girl was the daughter of his girlfriend Amy Taylor. She also pleaded guilty.
The child, La’Rayah Davis, was found dead in an apartment in Las Vegas in 2019. The autopsy report showed that the girl had, among other things, 20 broken ribs. There were also bruises to the heart, diaphragm and connective tissue, internal bleeding and a ruptured liver.
According to an NBC report, Amy Taylor told police at the time that she sat on her child to discipline him. Wood, on the other hand, said he used sports as a means of discipline. He also claimed that Davis fell backwards during sit-up exercises and hit his head on the carpet.
The life sentence imposed on Wood relates to the murder charge. It includes the possibility of parole after ten years. For the child abuse charge, Wood was sentenced by Judge Jacqueline Bluth of the District Court in Clark County to an additional 28 months to six years in prison. The sentences do not coincide. They must be served consecutively.
Prior to the verdict, Wood entered a so-called Alford plea. This is a formal admission of guilt in court. The Alford plea nevertheless allows the defendant to continue to assert his innocence.
