Former FBI agent Robert Hanssen, who was sentenced to life in prison for spying for the Russians, has died.
Hanssen was considered one of the spies who have caused the most damage to the United States ever. In 2002, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
On Monday, he was found dead in his cell, aged 79, according to the prison authorities. He was serving his life sentence in a maximum security prison in the state of Colorado. An unnamed source told the AP news agency that it is believed he died of natural causes.
When Hanssen was exposed, he had been a double agent for decades. He gave secret information first to the Soviet Union, and then to Russia.
As a reward he received money and diamonds. He confessed during the trial and therefore avoided the death penalty.
