Former F1 Driver Nico Rosberg’s Advice for Sergio Perez: Focusing on Own Performance and Ignoring Criticism Key to Success

According to former F1 driver Nico Rosberg, Sergio Perez should avoid criticism and try to focus fully on his own performance. This is the only way Perez can reach his level at the beginning of this season and try to fight for the world title again in the future.

After a few very bad race weekends, Sergio Perez is 125 points behind teammate and World Cup leader Max Verstappen. Especially mentally, things were wrong with Perez, who, according to Nico Rosberg, also let too much doubt creep into his head. And Formula 1 is not only a physical sport, but also a mental sport, which has been proven many times over.

With the comeback of Daniel Ricciardo, who got a race seat at AlphaTauri, Red Bull also seems to be increasing the indirect pressure on Sergio Perez. However, according to Nico Rosberg, who was once under enormous pressure at Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton as a teammate, Sergio Perez is in control of his future.

“I would advise Sergio to turn off all media and not look at social media because otherwise he will see a lot of memes targeting him, comments criticizing him, journalists asking him critical questions, you really have to shutting it down,” Nico Rosberg told the Sky Sports F1 podcast

“When I was fighting for the world title I shielded myself from social media, email and the news.”

“The only problem is that he still has to go to the track and sit in front of about 50 journalists who are going to ask him the question: ‘Hey Sergio, you seem to be having the most difficult battles and problems of your career. Do you think you’ll ever get out of here?’”

“That is something that always touches you, after all you have to listen to it, you cannot ignore it, you have to answer those questions.”

“The next question will be ‘Hey Sergio. Do you feel the threat of Daniel Ricciardo, do you feel that you might lose your race seat?’ And it just keeps going, it’s very hard because they keep hitting you.”

“That is one of the most difficult aspects of a race weekend for Sergio at the moment. You have to try to turn it off, you have to try to focus.”

According to Nico Rosberg, it is also crucial for Perez that he makes fewer public statements about his desire to beat Verstappen and become world champion. Instead, according to Rosberg, Perez would better focus on his own performance.

“Perez was very focused on saying he wants to beat Max, he wants to be champion. He always says that during the winter,” said Rosberg. “It’s time to forget about that and watch race weekend after race weekend, session after session, to do a great job.”

“You have to prepare as well as possible, you have to manage the risks well and just try to do a great job and build on that basis. That’s what it’s all about, that’s what he should try to do.”
