Former Ecuadorian Vice President Jorge Glas denounces “torture” during his detention at the Mexican Embassy

MADRID, 12 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas denounced this Thursday that the Ecuadorian Police tortured him during his detention after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, a case that has unleashed a diplomatic crisis between both countries and numerous international condemnations.

Glas has indicated in a telematic intervention from La Roca prison, after requesting a habeas corpus, that they “threw him against the wall, they kicked and kneed him on the hips,” they “stepped on his neck” and they “dislocated” his thumbs, as published by the Ecuadorian newspaper ‘El Universo’.

«They put flashlights in my face, they push me with rifles. Then I fall into a seat. They start yelling at me and I tell them ‘Let me get dressed’, because I was in my pajamas, and I said ‘Let me get my medicine’. I said ‘Don’t put the handcuffs on me, I want to get dressed and I want to get my medicines that are in front of me on a table’, next to where I was being pressured,” she explained.

After receiving numerous blows, Glas explained that “one of these guys, masked in black” “dislocated his left thumb” and then “the thumb was dislocated from his right finger.”

Likewise, he has stated that he was transported in a vehicle while they placed him on the floor of the vehicle, with a boot stepping on his neck and with his hands “backwards.”

“I must also tell you that I am certain that there was a woman filming, the torture method was being broadcast live,” he stated.

After that, he expressed that he would be “ashamed as an Ecuadorian” that the president of the country, Daniel Noboa, had given the order for his arrest, something that has not yet been proven, so he preferred to show caution and “believe that it is lie”.

Shortly after, representatives of the National Police gave their version of the events in the same hearing, ensuring that their task is to comply with the law and that they carried out the arrest by order of Noboa, as published by the Ecuavisa television network.

Likewise, they have rejected the accusations of torture, although they have acknowledged the progressive use of force and a dislocation of the finger as a result of Glas resisting arrest.

«I am not going to repeat that you cannot violate an Embassy, you cannot raid it, you cannot torture an asylum seeker, because I think that would be repetitive and would fall into the same stupidity of trying to justify the unjustifiable and that is not possible. “I am going to do it out of respect for all the people present,” said Glas.

It should be noted that Glas began a hunger strike as soon as he entered prison, as confirmed by his lawyer, Sonia Gabriela Vera. On Monday afternoon he was admitted to a hospital due to an episode of decompensation resulting from not having eaten for several hours, although he was finally transferred back to jail.

The Ecuadorian Police entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito over the weekend, where former Vice President Glas had been staying for weeks, alleging fear for his safety. Mexico had confirmed shortly before the police operation that it would provide political asylum to President Rafael Correa’s former ‘number two’.

The authorities of Ecuador accuse the former vice president of an alleged crime of embezzlement of public funds for reconstruction work in the province of Manabí after a strong earthquake in 2016, which left more than 670 dead.
