The ICBC is the largest bank in China and is largely owned by the Chinese state. Wellink, now 78, has been the only foreign supervisor at the financial group in recent years. Earlier this year, he was not comfortable with how China was dealing with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and he therefore decided to stop in March.

Wellink was president of DNB from 1997 to 2011, and thus the predecessor of current boss Klaas Knot. After leaving there, he joined the supervisory board of the Chinese state bank Bank of China in 2012. He later transferred to ICBC to fulfill a similar position there.
