Former Diplomat Stefan Tafrov Discusses Bulgaria’s Potential Schengen Accession and Diplomatic Challenges

Romania rushed to speak of a looming Schengen deal. This is very harmful in diplomacy, especially in matters of domestic political overtones. In Austria, the topic is extremely sensitive. Leaking information doesn’t help matters. Any discussions on the subject are premature. This is what former diplomat Stefan Tafrov said in “Your Day”.

According to him, it is too early for fanfare, but there should be optimism regarding Schengen.

“Bulgaria protects the EU’s external borders well and has every right to join. Austria’s requests are aimed at strengthening the EC’s support to Bulgaria along the border with Turkey. So they match ours,” he explained.

According to him, Bulgaria is technically ready for Schengen.

“We have been struggling for years, but there is progress and a breakthrough. Austria remained isolated in the EU after the Netherlands’ decision. The country cannot continue like this forever, it is inconvenient from a diplomatic point of view. There is pressure from the major European powers,” said Tafrov.
