Former Democratic Party leader Song Young-gil (pictured), a key party in the 2021 Democratic Party National Convention suspicion of money envelopes, returns home from Paris, France on the 24th.

Former CEO Song held a press conference in Paris on the 22nd (local time) and announced his intention to voluntarily leave the party and return home immediately, saying, “I take full responsibility for this situation.”

Former CEO Song said, “I intend to leave the Democratic Party as of today, taking all political responsibility. I will also resign as a standing advisor to the Democratic Party,” he said. “I will confidently respond to the prosecution’s investigation.”

He will return to Incheon International Airport at 3:00 pm on the 24th. Former CEO Song repeatedly explained that he was unaware of the money envelope suspicion. He said, “It was difficult to take care of the work of the camp when the candidates ran around like crazy every 30 minutes,” he said, saying that he did not remember receiving a report about the money envelope from Rep. Yoon Kwan-seok and Lee Seong-man.

It seems that former leader Song chose to leave the party voluntarily and return home immediately, failing to overcome the criticism from within the party. “The same principle should apply to me,” she said, referring to the voluntary withdrawal of 12 of her fellow lawmakers who were suspected of real estate speculation when she was a representative. Former CEO Song was scheduled to return to Korea in July after working as a visiting professor at the Paris Business School (ESCP) until June. With former CEO Song returning to Korea, the prosecution’s investigation is expected to speed up. Former CEO Song said, “I ask the prosecution to summon me immediately and not to harass the people who were with me.”

Democratic Party chief spokesman Kwon Chil-seung said on the 23rd, “We respect Song’s decision to return home immediately and voluntarily withdraw from the party.”

In a commentary, Sang-beom Yoo, chief spokesman for People’s Power, said, “I mentioned political responsibility, but in the end, it seems that I have done everything I have to do to avoid harming the Democratic Party, not the people,” he said. In a commentary, Justice Party spokesman Lee Jae-rang said, “The entire Democratic Party must put down everything and show a responsible attitude toward this suspicion of corruption.”
