The sad news came from Slovenia over the weekend: Goran Sanković, a former defender of Prague’s Slavia, died at the age of just 42. His death is being investigated by police after a 2002 World Cup participant has been missing since Friday.
Slovenian police said on Saturday afternoon that they had been missing a 42-year-old man since Friday morning. A few hours later, all the search was completed because the missing was found dead. According to Slovenian media, it was Goran Sanković, a former defender of Prague’s Slavia.
From 1996 to 2001 he played for the parent club CMC Publikum z Celje, from where he moved to Eden. He played 21 matches in a red and white jersey, after a year’s engagement in the Czech Republic from 2002 to 2004 he played in the Greek league – for Akratitos and Panionios.
Sanković was a member of various selections of the Slovenian national football team and the captain of all junior categories. He scored 23 matches for the team of twenty-one, he collected five matches for the ace. He was the only player from the Czech league who watched the 2002 World Cup, even though he did not play at it.
He ended his football career in 2004 due to a serious knee injury, but remained with football. He organized summer and winter training for sports teams and also worked as a sports agent. In the 2006/07 season, he was the sports director of the Publikum Celje football club.
