Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The body of former Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli was buried at the Jeruk Purut Public Cemetery (TPU), South Jakarta, Thursday (4/1/2024). Rizal’s funeral was attended by family and friends.
RIzal was not given a state burial even though he was a former state official. Member of the communications team and representative of Rizal’s family, Yosef Sampurna Nggarang, said this was Rizal’s will not to have a state burial.
“He was buried in the same grave as his late wife, Hera, and was not given a state burial even though he was an official because that was his will, because he was closer to everyone,” said Yosef after the funeral procession.
Yosef also revealed that Rizal had even refused when he was presented with a form to retire as minister.
“He rejected all of that. Because he said that the position was only a mandate, he rejected that, so the state also gave him a role, but we thank him on behalf of the family,” he said.
Rizal breathed his last breath at the age of 69 at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) Jakarta on Tuesday (2/1/2024) evening. Rizal was an economist who later became known as a bureaucrat.
He was in the cabinet during the era of the fourth President of the Republic of Indonesia Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), and the first period of the government of the seventh President of the Republic of Indonesia Jokowi.
During Gus Dur’s presidency, Rizal served as Head of Bulog, Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance. Then, in the first period of Jokowi’s administration he was appointed Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs.
