Russian figure skating coach Alexander Volkov declared “Match TV”, which, together with his wife, Canadian Martin Evenne, decided to change their daughter’s sports citizenship due to high competition in Russia and the desire to extend her career.
Volkov’s eldest daughter, 14-year-old Alexa, has been playing for Canada since this season.
“We decided that even before the isolation of Russian athletes from international competitions, it has nothing to do with politics. <...> It’s all about the crazy competition between Russian girls. Their sports life is so short … she Won the Olympics at the age of 15 and ranked at 16-17 years old. And we wish our daughter would ride longer. Therefore, we have chosen a country where it is psychologically much calmer to train, ”Volkov said.
The coach said that Alexa has Canadian citizenship and has never been a member of the Russian team, so “FFKKR let her go calmly.”
“Now my daughter is in Canada. She has already won the Quebec Junior Championship, which is the competition through which the results for the national championship are selected. Alexa won among 23 girls and is now waiting for the national championship of Canada in January, ”Volkov said.
Alexander Volkov is the son of the first Soviet world champion (1975) in men’s single skating, Sergei Volkov. He has his own school in Moscow, his wife works there as a choreographer.
Volkov has previously worked with Trusova and Stanislava Konstantinova.
