Today, April 29, the heart of the ex-mentor of Simferopol “Tavriya” Mikhail Ivanovich Fomenko stopped beating. Last year, Mikhail Ivanovich celebrated his 75th birthday. A specialist died in his native Sumy from cancer.
Mikhail Fomenko played as a player for Spartak Sumy, Zarya Lugansk and Dynamo Kiev. As part of the Kyiv team, he became the champion of the USSR three times, won the Cup Winners’ Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. As a member of the USSR national team, he took silver at Euro 1972 and bronze at the 1976 Olympic Games.
He began his coaching career in 1979. He coached Dynamo Kiev (1980-1984, 1993), with whom he won the championship title in 1993. In addition, he worked with Borisfen from Boryspil (1994-1995), CSKA Kiev (2000-2001), Metalist Kharkov (2001-2003), Metallurg Zaporozhye (2003), Salyut Belgorod (2010-2011 ), a number of other clubs.
In 2006-2008 headed the Simferopol “Tavriya”, with which he won a ticket to the Intertoto Cup in 2008 (only in the 3rd round, in an incredibly dramatic confrontation, the Simferopol team then lost in a penalty shootout to the French “Rennes”).
From December 26, 2012 to June 23, 2016, Mikhail Fomenko served as head coach of the Ukrainian national team. Under his leadership, the team reached Euro 2016.
