The AP and Reuters reported that a former Olympic national gymnastics coach was found dead on the 25th (local time) involved in the rape of the US gymnastics team.
According to prosecutors, the body of former gymnastics coach John Gathert, accused of sexual assault and human trafficking, was found at a rest area on a Michigan highway today. He was scheduled to appear in court in Eaton County near Lansing, Michigan.
In a statement, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said, “I received a report that his body was found this afternoon after Gathert took his own life,” and “the tragic ending of the story that was tragic to all involved.”
Gathert was the chief coach of the U.S. women’s gymnastics team who won the gold medal at the 2012 Olympics and the owner of the gymnastics gym in Lansing, Michigan. This gym is where Larry Nassar, the chief of the gymnastics team, who is a key figure in the rape case of the gymnastics team in the United States, treated athletes.
Nassar was accused of sexual assault and sexual assault on as many as 265 athletes while serving as the chief physician of Michigan State University’s gymnastics team.
Gathert, who has maintained a long relationship with Nassar, uses his reputation to lure young players into “world class”, and is also charged with verbal and physical abuse of the players, Reuters reported.
In the case of Nassar’s sexual assault, the resignation of Michigan State University president Lou Anna Simon and former president of the American Gymnastics Association and all of the board members of the Gymnastics Association, such as Steve Penny, resigned.
