The former head of the Krefeld City Archives, Paul-Günter Schulte, died at the age of 76. By April 2009 he had dedicated himself to the history of the city of Krefeld and then handed the keys over to his successor, Olaf Richter. In a figurative sense, the city archive is the city’s memory and stores archive material from eight centuries. With the beginning of his retirement, Schulte turned his former job into his hobby.
Born in Münster, Schulte took over the management of the Krefeld archive on Girmesgath from Guido Rotthoff in 1988. The city had poached Schulte, who lived in Krefeld, from the district of Viersen, where he had headed the district archive since 1979. Schule had studied history, Latin and Catholic theology at the universities of Münster and Munich, passed exams in philosophy and pedagogy and in 1979 passed the archival state examination for higher archival service.

For several years he supervised the meetings of the German Dante Society, which took place regularly in Krefeld, as well as those of the German-American historians symposium. He was also involved in the Otto Brües Circle of Friends and published articles on local and regional history, as most recently in the book “Der Niederrhein”. It is also thanks to Schulte that the Gotzes parament weaving mill was saved and can now be visited as the “House of Silk Culture”.
