Details: The helicopter carrying 74-year-old Piñera and three other people crashed into a lake in southern Chile.

The former president was found dead after rescuers arrived at the scene. The remaining three passengers survived.

Two sources told Reuters that Piñera himself was the pilot, although officials would not confirm this.

Pinera often spent summers in the Southern Hemisphere near the picturesque lakes of southern Chile and often piloted his own helicopter.

President Gabriel Boric declared three days of national mourning.

Funeral arrangements for the former leader, who served two consecutive terms as president from 2010 to 2022, will begin on Friday.

Interior Minister Carolina Toja said the ex-president’s body was recovered from a lake near the town of Lago Ranco: “We remember him for dedicating his life to public service.”
