Former Childcare Worker Charged with Over 1,600 Child Abuse Offenses in Australia

Atlanta, USA (CNN) — A former childcare worker in Australia has been charged with 1,623 child abuse offenses against 91 children allegedly committed over a 15-year period, the Australian Federal Police said in a statement Tuesday.

Police said the charges against the man, who was not identified, include 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual contact with a child under the age of 10.

The 45-year-old man from the Gold Coast had been in custody in Queensland since August 2022, when police arrested him and initially charged him with making child exploitation material and using the transport service to distribute it.

Police said more self-produced child abuse material was identified on electronic devices allegedly belonging to the man, which was uncovered during a special investigation after his arrest which involved finding the child victims.

“This is one of the most egregious cases of alleged child abuse our detectives have seen,” Assistant Commissioner Michael Fitzgerald of the NSW Police told a news conference.

Police allege the man recorded his crimes on phones and cameras while working at 10 childcare centers between Brisbane and Sydney and an unspecified overseas location between 2007 and 2022.

The other charges include hundreds of counts of indecent treatment of children under the age of 16, counts of making child exploitation material, and other counts of possession, production, distribution, or obtaining child exploitation material.
