Former Chief of Defense Urges Priority on National Security amidst Crisis on the Southern Black Sea Coast

“There is a crisis headquarters that assesses the possibilities, the army is ready to respond if there is a need,” said the former chief of defense, Gen. Konstantin Popov in the studio of “Bulgaria morning” on the occasion of the disaster on the Southern Black Sea coast.

He also commented on the resignation of the advisor to the Minister of Defense, which he defined as a correct decision.

“In recent years, justice began to prevail at the level of fists, knives, money, including the use of an official position. When justice is handed out in this way, it is a symptom that speaks volumes. He has rightly resigned,” said Gen. Popov added that the scandal with Mustafa Emin in “Pirogov” did not damage the prestige of the army.

The guest called, through Bulgaria ON AIR, to transfer political passions to the field of reason in the interest of society. According to him, the modernization of the Ground Forces is overdue.

“The price of the Stryker can be reduced, the numbers can be reduced or increased. A contract is very complex, there are many types of equipment, there are both combat and command, communication – this is a voluminous but important contract.” said Gen. Konstantin Popov.

The former chief of defense specified that these are very modern combat machines, well modernized and with strong armament, proven in many operations.

Gen. Konstantin Popov called for national security and defense to be a priority for those in power, especially in a situation when a war is being waged miles away.

“The situation in the Black Sea is extremely worrying, we are in the world’s focus, we must very wisely choose not only which side we are on, but also how to act. Imagine improper actions by our sailors, which can lead to serious political problems and clashes. We need to put ourselves at the table very clearly politically and know what we want to achieve so that our military can make the right decisions in complex situations,” added Gen. Popov.
