Former Catalan leader Puddemon arrested in Sardinia / Article

Former Catalan Prime Minister Karles Puddemon, a Member of the European Parliament, was arrested on the Italian island of Sardinia on Thursday. His extradition to Spain will be decided on Friday.

Representatives of the politician informed that he was detained in the city of Alghero on the Italian border on the basis of a warrant issued in October 2019. The decision to extradite him will be made on Friday by judges of the local court of appeal.

Earlier in the week, the media reported that Pudddemon was planning to attend an event, so his arrival was not unexpected for the authorities. There was a version that Catalan politicians had been invited by a group of Sardinian separatists, while representatives of the Pudddemon indicated that the purpose of the trip was to visit a folklore festival.

CONTEXT:

The Government of Catalonia hosted in October 2017 independence referendum despite a ban by the Spanish government and a court ruling that it is unconstitutional. Later in October, the Parliament of Catalonia declared independence, to which Madrid replied by introducing direct management over the Autonomous Community and dismissing the government of the then Prime Minister of Catalonia, Karl Puddemon.

The former head of the Catalan government has been in exile since 2017. Puddemon has been charged with incitement and waste of funds. In March, the European Parliament waived his parliamentary immunity, but the decision has been appealed.
