Barber won the world title at the World Cup in Beijing in 2015 by crossing the 5.90 metres, then returned and won gold in the same year at the Panamerican Games in Toronto.
His agent, Paul Doyle, announced via a message on Instagram the death of the Canadian hero, without providing details about the circumstances of his death.
He wrote on his official website, which is affiliated with Doyle Management: “A friend who will never be forgotten. Canadian Olympic pole vault champion Sean Barber has passed away.”
Barber still holds the Canadian indoor record with 6 metres, and outdoor with 5.93 metres.
Doyle continued, “Shawn also qualified for the pole vault final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. We will miss him greatly.”
Barber, who held dual American and Canadian citizenship, surprised everyone by winning the gold medal in the World Athletics Championships in 2015 at the age of 21, beating German Rafael Holzdeby and Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie, the most prominent candidate at the time to win the title.
