Former Bundesliga Striker Klaus Täuber Dies at Age 65

Former Bundesliga striker Klaus Täuber is dead. He died on Saturday at the age of 65.

This was shared by his former club FC Schalke 04 with. The former centre-forward was nicknamed “Boxer” because he shared his birthday with boxing legend Muhammed Ali and he had a robust style of play.

In the football-Bundesliga he played from 1978 to 1989 for 1. FC Nürnberg, Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen, scoring 50 goals in 137 Bundesliga games. With his brothers Jürgen and Stephan, Täuber is still the only trio of brothers to have played in the Bundesliga.

UEFA Cup winner with Leverkusen

He won the 1988 UEFA Cup with Leverkusen, converting a penalty in the shoot-out in the second leg of the final against Espanyol Barcelona – after Leverkusen lost the first leg 3-0.

“I would like to relive two days: the day I signed my first professional contract with 1. FC Nürnberg and the day we won the UEFA Cup with Bayer Leverkusen 23 years ago,” said Täuber the football magazine “11 Freunde” a few years ago.

Täuber then worked as a coach, including from 1995 to 2002 in 101 games as coach of the second team at Schalke 04.
