A former palace worker has admitted to stealing multiple items while working at Buckingham Palace. 37-year-old catering assistant Adamo Canto committed the crimes between November 2019 and August 2020, reported BBC News Monday evening.
Police found a large number of stolen items in the palace worker’s quarters.
These included medals and photo albums, such as an album with photos of the state visit that US President Donald Trump paid to the United Kingdom. The thief had also appropriated autographed photos of Prince Harry, Prince William and his wife Catherine.
The catering assistant took advantage of the fact that due to the corona pandemic he was given access to offices and other rooms where he normally could not go. As a result, Canto was able to steal items from employees’ lockers and Prince Andrew’s storage room, among other things.
According to the prosecution, the palace employee had listed 37 items worth between £ 10,000 and £ 100,000 (about £ 11,000 to £ 111,000) for sale on eBay. With the sale of the items, which were offered at a much lower price, Canto earned about £ 7,700.
Police tracked down Canto when other palace workers came across a medal on eBay. Navy officer Tony Johnstone-Burt wanted to wear this medal at a royal event, but couldn’t find it anymore. The track then led to Canto.
The former palace worker has been released on bail, but will have to appear in court at a later date. He may face a prison sentence.
