(Agence France-Presse, Taipei, 17th) Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss will point the finger at China and current British Prime Minister Sunak when he visits Taiwan today, demanding that the West take a tougher approach to Beijing.
In a speech in Taipei, Truss will call on current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to follow through on a campaign promise he made last year when he ran for the Conservative Party leadership to name China a strategic “threat”.
She will also ask Sunak to “immediately” close the Confucius Institutes controlled by the Chinese Communist Party and replace them with cultural centers run by Hong Kong and Taiwanese.
In her speech, she will accuse Sunak and other Western governments of “trying to cling to the idea that we can work with China on issues like climate change as if nothing is wrong”.
“But without liberal democracy, the rest is talk. We all know what happens to the environment or global health under totalitarian regimes that don’t tell the truth.”
“Not a word of what they say can be trusted.”
