The immunization certificate against Covid-19 of the former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro It is “false”, the Comptroller General of Brazil determined this Thursday after an investigation into the alleged manipulation of his vaccination card.
The watchdog has found inconsistencies between the records of the Ministry of Health and other official entities and Bolsonaro’s vaccination records, which stated that he had received a dose in Sao Paulo in July 2022.
“Therefore, regarding the vaccination that would have been carried out in Sao Paulo – the only record that still remains in the vaccination card of the former head of the Executive – (…) the conclusion was that it was a fraud against the system state anti-covid-19 vaccination registry,” the Comptroller’s Office stated in a statement.
However, it has recommended archiving the case “due to lack of minimum elements regarding the authorship of the events”, after verifying that many officials and health personnel had access to the vaccination computer system and could modify data.
The investigation, carried out in parallel to an investigation by the Federal Police, attempted to determine whether federal officials were involved in the falsification.
During the coronavirus pandemic, which left more than 700,000 dead in Brazil under Bolsonaro’s presidency (2019-2022), the far-right repeatedly questioned the effectiveness and convenience of vaccines. He later acknowledged that he was not immunized.
The Federal Police is investigating an alleged plot to “insert false anti-Covid vaccination data for the benefit of the then president of the republic, his daughter and close advisors,” according to official documents.
Bolsonaro testified before the Federal Police in Brasilia last May about this case. His house was raided as part of the investigations. In that statement, the 68-year-old former president denied the allegations and accused the authorities of trying to “fabricate a case” against him.
The objective would have been circumvent health restrictions imposed by the United States, where Bolsonaro traveled with a delegation of family and advisors two days before ending his term in December 2022, and where he remained for three months.
Mauro Cid, his former aide-de-camp and considered his right-hand man during the presidency, was preventively detained in May 2023 on suspicion of “initiating” the practice of illicit acts, which would also have had the collaboration of subordinates, a doctor, a lawyer and other military. Months later he was released after a plea agreement.
