Former Brazilian Football Star Dani Alves Found Guilty of Sexual Assault in Barcelona Nightclub

The former right-back was accused of “sexual assault by penetration” in a Barcelona nightclub in December 2022. The public prosecutor’s office had demanded a nine-year prison sentence plus ten years probation and 150,000 euros in compensation.

Alves was detained without bail in a Barcelona prison in January 2023. His statements changed several times during the interrogations and the trial. At first he claimed he didn’t know the victim, then he claimed they had consensual sex and admitted he feared his wife would leave him because of the allegations.

The victim’s version remained unchanged. Alves was found guilty by Spanish authorities on Thursday.

With 126 appearances, Alves is the third most used player in Brazil’s history – only Neymar (128) and Cafu (142) have played more for the Selecao. The 40-year-old was most recently under contract with Mexican club UNAM, but the club terminated his contract after his first arrest in January 2023 – meaning the end of his professional career.

He played 910 competitive games for Bahia, Sevilla, FC Barcelona, Juventus, Paris Saint-Germain and UNAM, scoring 67 goals.
