But now she says in the interview that her appearance has often been a source of frustration throughout her life. For example, in her youth Ekland struggled with weight problems, as a result of a disturbance of the body perception. “When I was 11 or 12, I was a very small, fat girl. That only changed when I was fifteen years old. I was always insecure and never satisfied with my appearance. When I was in school I had floppy ears and my teeth were very long. People called me ‘Dumbo’ and so I had it done in Hollywood.”
Ekland also underwent plastic surgery and had fillers inject into her lips. “I had something terrible done in the 90s. They had put everything in my lips, which ruined my face,” said the actress. Her treating physician used Artecoll, a permanent filler which was very popular in the 90s. Due to the many nasty side effects, permanent fillers banned today, but it was still possible back then.
Around the filler Ekland took several corticosteroid injections. “They were very painful. That surgery ruined my life. It was the biggest mistake of my life,” she says.
In 2021, Ekland is satisfied with her appearance. “I feel great, better than ever. Everyone is getting older. There’s no point complaining about it or wishing you could change.” She has more confidence. “I sometimes look at pictures of myself on the internet and see a beautiful woman. But that wasn’t the case before, I didn’t see that then.”
