Former Audi Chief Robert Stadler Sentenced in Dieselgate Scandal: First Official in Volkswagen Group to Face Criminal Ruling

Former Audi chief Robert Stadler was sentenced Tuesday in Germany to a suspended 21-month prison sentence in the “Dieselgate” scandal and a fine of 1.1 million euros.

With this ruling, Stadler became the first official in the “Volkswagen” group to issue a criminal ruling against him in the case of modified diesel engines, according to “Agence France Presse”.

He was the former chairman of the company’s board of directors between 2007 and 2018. He decided to plead guilty after a trial that lasted more than two years in Munich.

He was accused of being aware of installing illegal software in cars without intervening to end the situation.

The German giant Volkswagen Group, whose subsidiaries include not only Audi, but also Porsche, Skoda and Seat, admitted in September 2015 that it had installed a program to manipulate emissions levels in 11 million diesel vehicles around the world.

These programs make the compounds appear less polluting in laboratory studies than they are in the real world.
