The first and only Soviet president himself named another reason – the August putsch.
The reason for the collapse of the Soviet Union was a shortage of food, said in a published September 5 interview Lente.ru is a former assistant to the President of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev, Doctor of Economics Oleg Ozherelyev.
“Even during collectivization, agriculture was radically undermined. But in Russia it was the main industry. In fact, it played a decisive role in the funeral of the Soviet Union,” Ozherelyev said.
He noted that “hundreds of thousands of people” took part in the protests due to food shortages. “I repeat: if there were food in the stores, no” revolution “would have happened in 1991,” Ozherelyev said.
On December 8, 1991, in Belovezhskaya Pushcha, the heads of the RSFSR, the Ukrainian and Byelorussian SSR signed an agreement on the termination of the existence of the USSR and the creation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
Note that Gorbachev spoke on the anniversary of the August putsch, which considers the members of the State Committee for the State of Emergency (GKChP), who made the failed coup attempt, responsible for the collapse of the USSR.
