Former Argentine soccer player “Bocha” Maschio, intercontinental champion with Racing Club and World Cup winner with Italy, dies

BUENOS AIRES, Aug 20 (Reuters) – Former soccer player and coach Humberto “Bocha” Maschio, who in 1967 helped Racing Club become the first Argentine team to win the Intercontinental Cup, has died at the age of 91, the newspaper said on Friday the Avellaneda team.

“With great pain we announce the death of Humberto Maschio, Argentine, American and World football champion with our shirt,” Racing said on its X account.

“Those who leave their mark will never be forgotten. You will always be in our hearts, dear Bocha!

Maschio began his career at Quilmes in 1953 and after his first spell at Racing he stood out at Bologna, Atalanta, Inter and Fiorentina, which earned him the opportunity to play in the 1962 World Cup with the Italian team.

He won the Copa América in 1957 with Argentina after beating Brazil 3-0 in the final.

On his return from Europe, the midfielder was in his prime as a Racing icon, winning the league, the Copa Libertadores and the Intercontinental in a memorable final against Glasgow Celtic .

After retiring in 1968, he managed the Argentine national team in 1969, became the champion of the Inter-American and Libertadores Cups with Independiente in 1973 and had one last experience in Racing in 2000.
