Former Argentine President Fernandez accused of gender violence

Buenos Aires. Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández, who left power in December, was denounced on Tuesday by his partner and former first lady Fabiola Yañez for acts of gender violence, local press reported.

Yañez, who currently resides in Spain with their son, filed the complaint with the Argentine justice system through a Zoom hearing with federal judge Julián Ercolini, in which she also reported telephone harassment and psychological terrorism.

Following the complaint, the courts ruled that Fernández was prohibited from leaving the country and from approaching Yañez.

“Having learned from the media of Fabiola Yañez’s complaint against me, I want to express that the truth of the facts is different,” said the former president on his X account.

“I will only say that it is false and that what I am now accused of never happened. For the sake of my children’s safety, my own safety, and also that of Fabiola herself, I will not make any media statements, but I will provide the court with evidence and testimony that will show what really happened,” he said.

The facts came to light after a series of messages were found on the cell phone of Fernández’s former secretary, in the context of an investigation into influences in the direction of multi-million dollar insurance policies in the State.

In the messages, Yañez recounted an episode of gender violence that she had suffered when they both lived in the Presidential Residence of Olivos, the residence of the Argentine presidents.

On Sunday, the newspaper Clarín revealed that there are photographs, audio recordings and texts that confirm several episodes of physical aggression.
