The former American soldier who was arrested in April on suspicion of the Pentagon leak must await his trial in prison. That is what the judge decided on Friday.
The lawyers for 21-year-old Jack Teixeira had asked for their client to be placed under house arrest so that he would not have to wait in prison for his trial. The judge did not agree.
Teixeira is suspected of leaking classified documents from the US Department of Defense, also known as the Pentagon. The leaked documents included sensitive information about the war in Ukraine. For example, according to the United States, Ukrainian troops would not be able to provide sufficient counterweight to push back Russian troops.
In April it was announced that Teixeira will become official accused of “obtaining and distributing national defense information without authorization”. He is also charged with “obtaining and distributing secret documents without permission”. If found guilty, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
