Former Ambassador to Vietnam Receives Fines for Improper Solicitation and Graft

Former ambassador to Vietnam Kim Do-hyun, who was handed over to trial for receiving airfare and lodging expenses from a local Vietnamese company, was sentenced to a fine.

The Seoul Central District Court today (16th) ordered a fine of 3 million won and a fine of 3.8 million won for former ambassador Kim, who was charged with violating the Act on Prohibition of Improper Solicitation and Graft.

The court said, “It is difficult to see that it is an official job for the Vietnamese ambassador, who represents the Republic of Korea in Vietnam, to arrange meetings with private companies and play golf.”

In addition, it was judged that “it is unusual to be provided with accommodation for 3 nights and 4 days in addition to the official dinner.”

Former Ambassador Kim was accused of receiving airfare and lodging expenses from a local company while attending a golf course opening event in Vietnam in October 2018 with his family.

It was investigated that former Ambassador Kim stayed at a hotel for free for 3 nights and 4 days and arranged accommodations for former and current executives of Samsung Electronics, where he worked in the past.

The prosecution initially prosecuted former ambassador Kim for a fine of 5 million won, but the court referred him to a formal trial in October of last year.
