Marc Overmars was stunned by the way of negotiating the transfer of Gaston Avila to Ajax. The former technical director says this in a candid interview with NOS. For Overmars it also felt wrong to sell a player like Avila to Ajax.

“Very bizarre. Very bizarre,” Overmars summarizes the negotiations with Mislintat about Avila. “I said to my colleague: ‘I want to stay out of it a bit. You just handle the contact with the people in the office, the settlement and so on.’ I sent Mislintat one message. It was the fastest deal ever. But it was also difficult for me because I thought: God, what are they getting?”
Overmars was absolutely not convinced that Avila would be a good fit for Ajax. “He was also in doubt. He was a player who was really loved in the playing group. You have to sell something to the club you love. At Ávila I thought: he is not a typical Ajax player.”

Ajax ultimately transferred 14.5 million euros to Royal Antwerp for Avila’s services. According to Overmars, he and his colleagues were indeed very excited about that transfer. “Yes. That is the sum submitted to Ajax. Mislintat then decides whether that amount should be paid for Ávila. It is not Marc Overmars who decides that.”
