Sjaak Swart has had it with Maurits Hendriks, Chief Sports Officer of Ajax. This is what the club icon said in conversation with journalist Mike Verweij of De Telegraaf. Swart also lashes out at the dismissed technical director Sven Mislintat and mentions a number of names of players that Ajax should have bought last summer.
Mister Ajax still doesn’t understand the purchases made last summer. “There are five or six players who were never recruited before. That rearguard… you can walk through it in no time. If Johan Cruijff had still played football, he would have scored at least six times against Ajax in every match,” said Swart.
The Dutch record champion spent quite a bit of money on incoming transfers last summer. Swart blames the total collapse of Ajax on two people in particular. “The fact that Mislintat was brought in is unforgivable. And that he was allowed to spend 115 million euros on players that no one knew.”
“Really, I never have to see Mislintat and Hendriks again,” the furious Swart continues. “But despite everything, Hendriks still walks around at De Toekomst. Unimaginable. And the fact that those commissioners approved all of Mislintat’s purchases is ridiculous. There was no control.”
Swart does not point the accusing finger at the dismissed Maurice Steijn. According to the former international, the Hague coach did not get what he asked for at all. “Maurice Steijn wanted Sergiño Dest, Stefan de Vrij, Nicolás Tagliafico, Jerdy Schouten, Vangelis Pavlidis, Isco, Hakim Ziyech and Calvin Stengs. If you had bought it, you would have played for the championship for much less money.”
Hendriks, who is the head of Jut in Swart’s interview, will leave Ajax on March 1, 2024. The Amsterdam club announced this news in January. As a result, the Chief Sports Officer is quitting nine months earlier than planned.
Ajax will play Conference League football for the first time in the club’s history on Thursday evening at 9:00 PM and will make its debut with a home match against FK Bodø/Glimt. Swart hopes for better times in Amsterdam soon. “I hope to be able to talk about the Champions League again soon, but I’m afraid that will take another year or two.”
