Formation of Emergency Unity Government: Netanyahu, Gantz, and Galant Lead Israel’s ‘Small War Cabinet’

A so-called “small war cabinet” will be created that will direct the war and will consist of only Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yo’av Galant and Gantz, the website reports Times of Israel. Former Israeli Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will act as “observers” alongside them.

In addition to the existing ministers of the power departments, the cabinet will include five members of Ganc’s political coalition – Ganc himself, Eizenkot, MP Gideon Sa’ar and two others to be named. So far, a seat has been left in the cabinet for opposition leader Ja’ir Lapid, who has refused to join the government if the far-right parties Religious Zionism and Ocma le-Jisra’el remain in it.

It was also agreed that no laws or government resolutions unrelated to the conduct of the war would be pushed through the Knesset during the war, the Times of Israel website noted.

Netanyahu called for the formation of a national unity government on Saturday after an unprecedented attack on Israel by the Palestinian movement Hamas, in which terrorists killed at least 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in a ground attack and rockets fired from the Gaza Strip.

According to some comments, for example on the Al Jazeera television website or on the Israeli news website Ynet, Netanyahu is also trying to gain “political cover” for the failure of his cabinet by forming an alliance with the opposition and creating a government of national unity. Many criticize the fact that the Israeli government, army and secret services have failed in fulfilling their basic duty – to ensure the safety of the citizens of the State of Israel.

By creating a “national unity” government, the Israeli prime minister also wants to show that the country is united again after nine months of mass anti-government protests. Since January, people have been demonstrating against the government’s proposal for judicial reform, which many have described as a threat to democracy.

Thousands of reservists also protested against her. On the other hand, according to Al-Jazeera, Netanyahu knows that once “the dust settles,” that is, when this escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict ends, his government will face criticism for having committed such an unprecedented terrorist attack on Israel.
