“Forgotten conflict” between Armenia and Azerbaijan flares up again: civilian deaths in Nagorno-Karabakh

The separatist region has declared a state of war and is mobilizing the citizens. All residents over the age of 18 are instructed to prepare for battle. Armenia has also declared a general mobilization.

The US, Russia, Turkey, France, the European Union and the United Nations are calling on the parties to immediately cease hostilities. If the conflict were to get out of hand, it is likely to have more than just regional consequences. Armenia has traditionally been supported by the Christian Orthodox co-religionists in Moscow, while the Muslim country of Azerbaijan is supported by Turkey, hereditary enemy of the Armenians.
