Thousands of tourists have had to be evacuated to the north of the Greek island of Rhodes, whose south is plagued by violent forest fires. At least 70 Belgians who booked their trip with the tour operator TUI and around 90 others who had booked holidays with Sunweb are affected.
Foreign Affairs claim that the Belgian Embassy in Athens has contacted all Belgians currently present in Rhodes and of whom the FPS Foreign Affairs is aware. All are safe and those in need are receiving consular assistance.
Forest fires in Greece: TUI group cancels all flights to Rhodes, but maintains returns
The registers of the Belgian Embassy in Athens show 132 Belgians residing in Rhodes. Seventy citizens of the flat country have also registered via the “Travellers Online” platform. Belgians who are not registered at the embassy or on “Travelers Online”, or their relatives in Belgium, can contact the Belgian embassy in Athens (emergency number: +30 6945235055) or the permanent guard service of the FPS Foreign Affairs in Brussels: 02/501.81.11.
The Embassy in Athens and the FPS Foreign Affairs have already been contacted by around twenty Belgian families with a request for assistance. Their situation is being monitored on a case-by-case basis, the utility said.
“The FPS Foreign Affairs remains fully mobilized, in consultation with the Greek authorities and the tour operators concerned”, concludes the ministry.
