Forest fires: Disaster alert in Saxon Switzerland

IThe fight against the flames continues in the forest fire areas in southern Brandenburg and in the Saxon Switzerland National Park, but the situation eased somewhat on Wednesday night. In both areas, the spread of the fire had been prevented, it said on request. In Brandenburg, the flames are now under control, but in Saxony the situation in two out of five fire areas remains tense.

However, a firefighter was injured during the extinguishing work in the Saxon Switzerland National Park. During an operation, a fire hose burst and the woman had to be taken to a hospital, said the spokesman for the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district office, Thomas Kunz, on Wednesday. Almost 150 firefighters are on duty on Wednesday. These are supported from the air by five helicopters.

“The area is rugged and not easy to reach,” said Kunz, explaining the difficulties faced by the fire brigade. In addition, dead wood and the weather made firefighting more difficult. The fire currently covers about 250 hectares. After a reconnaissance flight by a police helicopter in the morning, there should be another briefing.

Due to too many onlookers in the forest fire area, the operation of the Kirnitzschtalbahn had to be stopped. On the second day of the extinguishing work, many onlookers, who traveled primarily with the Kirnitzschtalbahn, visited the affected forest areas around the cowshed despite the ban on entry and hindered the extinguishing work, the responsible district office announced late Tuesday evening. The general decree will be lifted as soon as the situation has eased.

Breathe easy in the Elbe-Elster district

The devastating forest fire in Elbe-Elster district in southern Brandenburg is now under control. District fire chief Steffen Ludewig said on Wednesday morning in Falkenberg after a briefing. “The situation is stable, and also relaxed overnight.” Cooling down due to lower temperatures and a decrease in the wind would have helped. Evacuations from local locations are no longer an issue.

The fire area still covers around 800 hectares, but a hot fire with flames and smoke is still raging over an area of around 500 hectares, the district fire chief reported. Around 400 emergency services are fighting the flames. Two Bundeswehr firefighting helicopters have been in action since morning. They take the water from the nearby Kiebitzsee, which has been closed for this purpose. From Wednesday afternoon, attempts should be made to extinguish the fire from the ground. Another helicopter flies over the forest fire area to observe the situation.

Areas contaminated with ammunition continue to cause concern. The ordnance disposal service is on site, said Ludewig. “We will find out where we can really go in there and where there is danger.”. A Bundeswehr tank, which is supposed to cut aisles for the fire brigades, is currently not ready for use, and a replacement tank has been requested, which is to lay aisles around a threatened commercial area until late at night. According to the district fire chief, the extinguishing work will take at least a week. “All comrades are at the breaking point,” said Ludewig, it was not the first mission this year.

The fire spread from the Bohemian Switzerland National Park in the Czech Republic to the Saxon Switzerland National Park on Monday. In Bad Schandau in Saxon Switzerland, a disaster alarm has been in effect since Tuesday. Tourists should avoid the area. In the district of Saxon Switzerland-Osterzgebirge, the forests may no longer be entered until further notice. Residential areas were initially not threatened.

Weather forecast gives hope

Meanwhile, the weather seems to support the emergency services on Wednesday: As reported by the German Weather Service (DWD) in Leipzig, rain is slowly moving eastwards from the Vogtland in the morning and will reach the Ore Mountains and later also Saxon Switzerland at noon. However, it cannot be said how heavy the rain will be, said the meteorologist from Leipzig.

According to the DWD, the wind in southern Brandenburg will be weak on average on Wednesday. In the course of the day, however, gusts of up to 40 kilometers per hour could occur again. “But there is no rain in sight until Friday evening,” said meteorologist Helga Scheef.

Forest fire spread from the Czech Republic

In Czech Republic Around 450 firefighters near the German border continue to fight one of the largest forest fires in the country’s history. The flames raged over an area of around ten square kilometers in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park, as a spokesman for the emergency services said on Wednesday. However, further spread was prevented. In the town of Hrensko near the border with Germany, turntable ladders were used to extinguish embers in the rocks above the town. So far, around 450 people have had to leave their homes and apartments.

Firefighters arrived from distant regions of the Czech Republic to relieve exhausted colleagues. With wood harvesting machines, so-called harvesters, aisles are to be cut in the forest to put barriers in the way of the fire. Two helicopters that can drop water from containers also arrived from Poland and Slovakia. Four Czech police and army helicopters have been in action for days.

The forest fire broke out on Sunday. The Czech National Park Bohemian Switzerland borders on the Saxon Switzerland on the German side. It offers unique rock formations such as the Prebischtor, a rock bridge made of sandstone. The national park has existed since the year 2000 and covers an area of almost 80 square kilometers.
