Forest fire ravages Sardinia – 400 evacuated

The fire service reports that several houses on the western part of the island have been damaged. An area of about 40 square kilometers has been swallowed up by the flames around Montiferru, near the center of Italy’s second largest island.

However, no people were reported injured or killed.

Authorities have evacuated about 200 people from the town of Cuglieri during the night, and another 155 from Sennariolo. Here, however, the flames have not yet reached residential areas.

More than half of the evacuees in Cuglieri were allowed to go home on Sunday, reports the news agency ANSA.

Eleven firefighters are working to put out the flames, according to the head of Sardinia’s civil defense. Extinguishing work is hampered by wind, and the danger of forest fires is described as “extreme”.
